brought to her 15 years ago by
Dutch Christian missionaries who
saw that Rasha had more musical
ability than they could nurture.
Rasha, whose family is Muslim, is
now 26. She also is autistic.
Devorah, whose aunt and uncle,
Drs. Gene and IIintzi Schramm,
live in Southfield, recognized at
once that Rasha had a gift.
Devorah has worked with Rasha
weekly, sometimes doing nothing
but listening to the melodies pour-
ing out of her talented student.
"When Devorah speaks of
Rasha," Mintzi said, "she speaks
first of her amazing musical talent.
Then she talks about the challenge
of teaching someone so gifted and
so disconnected to the world.
Devorah has been successful with
Rasha because she relates to her as
a musician and a human being.
The documentary isn't as much
about race relations as about
human relations, which is the
foundation for any peace."
Rasha lives in Beit Jala in a new
facility for mentally disabled chil-
dren that is an
extension of
the home set
up in 1982 by
Edward and
the late Heleen
Vollbehr.
Devorah, 40,
who was born
in New Jersey
and grew up in Devorah Schramm
Massachusetts,
made aliyah in 1975. She now lives
in Gilo, a Jerusalem suburb, with
her husband, Lenn, and four chil-
dren. She has degrees in piano per-
formance from the Eastman School
of Music and Boston University,
and an Artist's Diploma in compo-
sition from the Jerusalem Rubin
Academy of Music.
Richard Trank made the film
under the auspices of the Simon
Wiesenthal Center's Moriah Films
division. Beautiful Music won the
Best Documentary award in
October at the Hollywood Film
Festival.
Beautiful Music will be
shown at 7:30 p.m. Saturday,
Dec. 17, at Young Israel of
Oak Park, 15140 W. 10 Mile
Road. The film runs 40 min-
utes. Tickets for the event, at
$8 per person, include a
pizza dinner and dessert.
Reservations for this Malaya
Malka ("Escorting the
Queen," the post-Havdalah
meal) will be taken until Dec.
12; ages 12 and up only.
