working in England,
where her sculptural
focus developed,
Duckworth accepted
a teaching position at
the University of
Chicago. She was
encouraged by her
husband, furniture
designer and sculp-
tor Aidron
Duckworth, who sep-
arated from his wife
shortly after
their move to
America.
"I bought an
old pickle fac-
tory in Chicago
and use the
first floor as my
studio',' says
Duckworth,
whose work has
been part of the
collections of
museums, uni-
versities and
commercial
buildings.
"Above that is
my apartment,
office and a little showroom. The prop-
erty also has a garden, which is impor-
tant because I often get my inspiration
from nature.
"One year, during a program for
artists, I had lunch with Mayor Daley.
He said I was a pioneer because I
bought the building so early. The street
has since been upgraded, and people
are buying the houses there."
Although this is Duckworth's first s
exhibit at Cranbrook, she has visited
the campus several times. One visit was
to participate in a symposium with
other artists whose work was part of
the private collection of Maxine and
Stuart Frankel.
"For years, I worked almost like a 9-
5, six-days-a-week office employee,"
says Duckworth, who likes to garden,
cook, watch movies and visit museums.
"I now work fewer hours and take
Saturday and Sunday off. I've given
workshops in the spring and autumn
and seen much of the United States
through those programs, but I don't do
that anymore.
"I think art is a very important part
of life because it provides a less materi-
alistic view. It is uplifting and makes
viewers feel better. I know it makes me
feel better, and I think it's added to my
longevity because it has given me a
very physical job:"
