ylvia Paul insisted that
the Jewish News not use
a photo of her in a
rocking chair. "I'm not a rock-
ing type!" she declared after her
95th birthday celebration.
What's more amazing is how
she celebrated her 94th. When
her son, Charles of Farmington,
asked her what she wanted for
her birthday, she asked a
motorcycle ride.
Charles and daughter-in-law

have traveled throughout the
world on their bikes.

passenger seat of the BMW
cycle, and enjoyed a 20-30
minute drive around Farmington
and Farmington Hills.
This summer, a planned hot
air balloon ride over Oakland
County's lakes area was can-
celed because of poor weather.
Instead, she was driven around
the lakes' region in her son's
auto.
Mrs. Paul, who grew up in
eastern New Jersey, said, "I still
can't believe I'm 95. My friends
have fallen by the wayside and
I'm still here."
At the age of 17, she went to
work in a clerical position for
New Jersey Bell Telephone Co.,
making $17 a week, "which was
a lot of money then."

She worked in several
departments before marrying
Albert Paul at the age of 29.
After being a stay-at-home
mom for 10 years, she was
asked. to join the United Jewish
Federation in Newark, N.J. She
held several clerical posts with
the federation for 38 years, and
retired in 1988.
When asked about her
health, Mrs. Paul replied: "Kein
ayn horah" (don't tempt the evil
eye).
.Although she uses a walker
and wears a hearing aid, Mrs.
Paul has no trouble getting
around and interacting with
friends at her Farmington Hills
retirement complex. She takes
only one medication, for a
breathing problem, plus vita-

She believes the most impor-
tant ingredient for a healthy life
is reading. "I learn a lot and it
frees you." She mostly enjoys
mysteries, biographies and
romance novels, in addition to
her daily crossword puzzles.
Over her lifetime, Mrs. Paul
has traveled throughout the
world, including Paris, London,
Amsterdam and Israel,
although her favorite destina-
tion is New York City because
it's "so alive."
A widow for 26 years, she
moved to Farmington Hills
nearly seven years ago.
Besides Charles, owner of a
marketing business, she has
