ave Zeitlin'sback both-
ered him all last basket-
ball season. Sometimes,
the pain shot down his leg. But
surgery this summer that
repaired a ruptured disc seems
to have done wonders for the
Lake Superior State University
junior point guard.
"I'm feeling much better:'
Zeitlin said. "I'm not back to
100 percent yet, but closet'
Third-year Lake Superior
State Coach Mike Fitzner is
happy to have a healthy Zeitlin
in Sault Ste. Marie because the
former Walled Lake Western
High star is needed on and off
the court.
Zeitlin is one of just two
returning players on the Lakers'
roster and the only point guard
with college experience. Four
Lake Superior State players
graduated, four were released
from the team, and one trans-
ferred.
"Dave is a tremendous pass-
er, one of the best in our league
[Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference], and he
takes a lot of pride in that:'
Fitzner said. "We also need his
leadership off the floor."
This is Zeitlin's fourth year
with the Lakers. The 6-foot-1,
190-pounder played in 26
games as a freshman and he
was red-shirted the following
season. He started 12 of the 23
games he played last year and
averaged nearly five points per
game. Zeitlin was second on the
team in assists with 67 and he
averaged just 1.4 turnovers per
game.
In a 96-95 win over Ashland,
Zeitlin scored 12 points, dished
out 15 assists, and did not com-
mit a turnover. That victory was
one of only four the Lakers
recorded in a long 4-23 season.
Zeitlin thinks Lake Superior
can do much better this year.

"Our new guys are very athlet-
ic," he said. "I think we're going
to surprise a lot of people."
Zeitlin, 21, has encountered a
few surprises making the
adjustment from living in a
major met-
ropolitan
area to
Michigan's
Upper
Peninsula.
"It's differ-
ent, but I
like it;' he
said. "The
Zeitlin
biggest dif-
ference is a lot
of places close early."
The son of Farmington Hills
residents Barry and Lisa Zeitlin
is a business administration
major.

Sister Act

Carly Zeitlin, Dave Zeitlin's
sister, is one of the major rea-
sons why Coach Dave Walther is
so excited about the future of
the young Walled Lake Western
girls basketball team. This is
the 5-7 sophomore's second
year on the squad. Carly nor-
mally is one of the first players
to come into the game off the
bench. ``Carly is a hard-work-
ing, up-and-coming player who
is eager to learn:' Walther said.
"If she continues to improve,
she'll be in our starting lineup
next season!'
The Warriors struggled to a
3-15 record this fall with five
sophomores, two juniors and
four seniors on their roster.
While victories have been rare,
Western's juniors and sopho-
mores have gained valuable
playing experience. Help could
be on the way from the junior
varsity and freshman teams.
Walther said the JV was 13-5
and the freshmen also had a
winning record.
Carly plans to try out for
Western's volleyball team this
