High Holiday At Hospital

On the first day of Rosh Hashanah, members of Temple Kol Ami in
West Bloomfield gathered at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit to con-
duct its second annual Rosh Hashanah service for staff and patients.
When members arrived at the hospital chapel to conduct the 2:30
p.m. service, a group of Muslims were already praying there. Kol Ami
members completed their preparations quietly, then started their
Rosh Hashanah service on one side of the chapel as the Muslims con-
cluded their prayers on the other side.
"It's a matter of inclusion; we have a lot of people of all faiths who
work here at the hospital," said the Rev. Bill Hale. "It's good that we
have a chance to pray together."
The Rev. Hale, who directs the hospital's pastoral care section, was
enthusiastic about enabling the hospital's Jewish staff and patients
access to the High Holiday service. Some Jewish staff members
included Dr. Stephen Liroff, a urologist; Dr. Steven Gellman, a cardiol-
ogist; Dr. Margaret Jordan, a psychologist; Ellen Kachalsky, a social
worker, and her husband, Lloyd.
Kol Ami members Wendy Goldberg and Caryn Roman developed
the service, and Roman also played guitar. Ten-year-old Adam Gross
performed the mitzvah of sounding the shofar.
