"Steinsaltz's father, who had once
fought for the Spanish leftist gov-
ernment, also attended, paternal
pride overcoming his sense of
irony:They say that someone like
my son appears only once in
2,000 years — and it had to hap-
pen to me:" the elder Steinsaltz
remarked with a smile:"
Even then, Rabbi Weiner
described Adin Steinsaltz as a
"phenomenon of talmudic
genius, who apparently fully
committed to Orthodoxy is yet
able to keep such open windows
in terms of personal relation-
ships as well as ideas:"

Prolific Author

Rabbi Steinsaltz has published
38 volumes of his translation
and elucidation of the
Babylonian Talmud in Hebrew
— an effort begun in 1965 —
and is seven volumes away from
completion. He also has pub-
lished 22 volumes, spanning
four tractates, in English, has
completed 21 volumes in
French, four in Russian and the
first Spanish volume is under
way. The Hebrew version is now
available in an edition with a
new layout, featuring the origi-
nal Vilna page facing the trans-
lation. Additional volumes may
be published in English. Other
books by Rabbi Steinsaltz have
been printed in English, French,
German, Hebrew, Italian,
Portuguese, Russian, Spanish,

Swedish and Chinese.
In addition, Rabbi Steinsaltz is
publishing a second volume of
his commentary on the Tanya
this fall, Learning from the
Tanya:' and is working on a
biography of the Lubavitcher
rebbe.
Kurzweil, who has known
Rabbi Steinsaltz for 23 years, is
writing a book about the rabbi,
his teachings and their relation-
ship.
In addition to being a student,
Kurzweil says he proudly serves
as the rabbi's chauffeur when he
comes to New York, and they
always have a lot to talk about
when inevitably stuck in traffic.
The book will be based on their
private conversations, his expe-
riences attending the rabbi's lec-
tures in large and small forums,
going with him to meetings and
to the grave of the Lubavitcher
rebbe, and seeing him engaged
with children, Chasidim,
strangers and friends.
Kurzweil relates that when he
refers to quotes from Rabbi
Steinsaltz's books and essays as
gems, the rabbi prefers to call
them pebbles. El
