dat Shalom Synagogue is a
caring community, and con-
gregants and friends proved
that — by giving from their hearts
and their pockets on Sept. 11.
That morning, the Farmington Hills
synagogue's Social Action and Caring
committees teamed up to aid people in
need, both locally and across the coun-
try. A blood donor drive — the first of
two this coming year — brought in 75
pints of blood. In addition, congre-
gants and friends donated a variety of
needed goods and $650 in funds for
the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.
While waiting to donate blood,
Nancy Welber Barr of West
Bloomfield said that every day is a
really important day to give blood but
this day was "particularly significant
because it is the fourth anniversary of
9-11 and because the country is still
recovering from the catastrophe of
Hurricane Katrina."
"Volunteering in this way is in the
blood of so many Adat Shalom con-
gregants," said Laurie Leeb of Orchard
Lake, who pitched in to assist with the
blood drive. "I can't donate blood, so
I'm here to donate my time," added
volunteer Paula Finkelstein of
Southfield.
Debby Portney and Ruth Zerin,
both of West Bloomfield, and Amy
Strauss of Farmington Hills chaired
the blood drive. Social Action chair-
persons Portney and Celia Lubetsky of
West Bloomfield worked along with
Caring Community chairperson
Micki Grossman of Farmington Hills
to get the word out and make arrange-
ments for the donations.
