Local Relief Efforts
Local synagogues, organizations and
businesses offer these opportunities for
contributing to victims of Hurricane
Katrina:
• Shelley and Ed Kohl of West
Bloomfield will give free room and
board to an evacuated adult Jewish
couple for however long they need a
place to stay. Contact
eskohl@comcast.net.
• Bead Works Inc., a Franklin retail-
er, will promote beading parties to
raise money for hurricane relief.
Usually held in private homes, parties
can be hosted by anyone with an
interest in beading or in contributing
to the cause. One hundred percent of
the instruction fees and a percentage
of all sales will be donated to hurri-
cane relief efforts.
For a limited time, Bead Works will
also donate 20 percent of all retail
store sales to hurricane relief. Call
(248) 855-5230 or
beads@franklinbeadworks.corn.
• The Young Adult Division of the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit is bringing tzedakah boxes to
its bar night, 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept.
22, at Midtown Cafe, Birmingham.
There is no cover charge, but 100 per-
cent of contributions will be forward-
ed to Hurricane Katrina victims via
Federation's Humanitarian Relief
Fund.
• Temple Beth El's Executive
Director Tom Jablonski was
informed Aug. 31 by the Red Cross
that a truck would be headed south
Sept. 2. Beth El was asked to pro-
vide water, plastic and paper dinner-
ware, paper towels, disinfectants,
personal hygiene items and volun-
teers to pack the truck.
Beth El reached every member it
could by e-mail and Youth Director
Denise Goodman telephoned religious
school students. In less than 24 hours,
dozens of members had purchased and
dropped off supplies at the temple.
Paul Wertz of Excellence Too Catering
contributed supplies as well.
Volunteers arrived Friday morning
to pack the truck driven by Red
Cross volunteer Michael Drew and
quickly filled 500 cubic feet of cargo
space.
Temple Beth El has since packed a
second truck and is working toward
packing a third. Contributions can be
brought to the temple lobby during
business hours.
In addition, the religious school
has designated several disaster relief
funds as recipients of their tzedakah
money collected during September
and is collecting gift cards from
national chain stores to aid the disas-
ter victims.
The Young People's Society and
Junior Young People's Society have
begun a Noah's Ark program, collect-
ing Beanie Babies for the next three
months for the children displaced by
the disaster.
If your group is doing anything special to
aid victims of Hurricane Katrina, please
let us know. Call Sy Manello at (248)

Katrina In Israel
Responding to needs in the wake of
Hurricane Katrina, the Jewish
Agency for Israel has offered a free
semester of study to all New Orleans
students interested in continuing
their studies in Israel. Qualified stu-
dents from colleges and universities
in the New Orleans area can apply to
programs offered by Israel's five lead-
ing universities.
The Hebrew University of
Jerusalem, Tel Aviv University, Haifa
University, Bar-Ilan University and
Ben Gurion University have agreed to
expedite the registration of students
from New Orleans wishing to study in
Israel.
The Jewish Agency for Israel, in
co-operation with Hillel: Foundation
for Jewish Campus Life and the
United Jewish Communities (UJC),
has approached all U.S. Jewish corn-
munities in the U.S. with the goal of
locating students to offer them the
alternative opportunity of studying
in Israel. The offer has been extend-
ed to all denominations and includes
a free semester of tuition, room and
board, and a round trip flight to
Israel.
