eo Barris knows how to celebrate a special birthday. For
his 80th, he jumped out of an airplane flying at 14,000
feet and dropped 5,000 feet before opening his parachute.
All this took place while strapped to an instructor while flying
over an airport in Tecumseh.
Leo, a Walled Lake resident, first tried parachuting during
World War II Army training as an 18-year-old. But, after one
practice jump, he decided to follow a different path in the
infantry. After arriving in Europe, he was transferred to a 'tank
unit.
His jump Saturday, Sept. 3, was just a week before his birthday,
Sept. 11.
On the ground, watching, was Mitzie Zucker, 70, of West
Bloomfield, Leo's girlfriend of five years, and Leo's daughters and
other relatives and friends.
Leo holds a birthday celebration every five years. Previous cele-
brations were far less exciting, he said.
"I give the birthday jump a lot of thought," said Leo. "My kids
came in from California, and on the day of the jump there were a
lot of relatives and friends there. They watched me suit up."
Fourteen to 16 jumpers jammed into the plane. One, a 20-year-
old man, decided at the last minute not to take the plunge.
After Leo landed, he said, "I wasn't nervous," and that "I
enjoyed it."
The jump cost $190, not including another $90 for a videogra-
pher to capture the event.
Leo's birthday activity was just one example of his physical fit-
ness. He works out three times a week and frequently goes danc-
ing with Mitzie.
Actually, Mitzie and Leo knew each other long before their rela-
tionship developed. "Leo has been a close friend of my late hus-
band's brother (William Zucker) since they were 10 years old,"
Mitzie said.
Both were widowed after long marriages: 45 years for Mitzie
and 42 for Leo.
A little over five years ago, they crossed paths at Langan's
Norwest bowling lanes in Farmington Hills. They chatted briefly,
catching up with each other's lives, before he asked her for a date.
And as Mitzie likes to tell it, "The rest is history" ❑
