out of soul for my beloved Detroit."
... Roberta Cohen Cooper, Cave
Creek, Ariz.
REUNION DEPT. ... The gradu-
ates of Detroit Central High's class of
1955 included many guys and gals
who went on to prominent lives ...
Eugene Applebaum and Barbara
(Halpern) Levin, wife of U.S. Sen.
Carl Levin, etc. ... The grads will have
their 50th reunion, Saturday, Sept.
10, at Temple Beth El ... Call Irwin
Rabinowitz, (248) 888-1470, or go to
its Web site,
w-vvw.detroitcentra155.com.
He went on to great heights in
show business, but Joey Nederlander
might never forget his not being
admitted to the Caliphs, one of
Central High's student clubs in 1945
because of a one blackball ruling ...
20 years later, the Caliphs had a
reunion here and took in a new mem-
ber ... but it wasn't Joey ... The '45
guy who blackballed him back then
must have been at the reunion, says
grad Art Plotkin.
Maybe they'll see each other again
on Sunday, Sept. 18, when Central
High's 1945 class has its noon brunch
0th reunion at Temple -Shir Shalom,
West Bloomfield ... Call Lee Goren,
248) 661-9069, or Martin Myers,
248) 855-9073.
THANKS ... To Oak Park's Irwin
Mr. Baseball" Cohen for concurring
with me that Malcolm Bingay was
indeed Iffy the Dopester as per the
answer given to Samuel Kenman of
St. Petersburg, Fla., who asked in the
Question & Answer Dept. if we knew
who Iffy was years ago ... "Malcolm
Bingay was one of the charter mem-
bers of the Baseball Writers
Association of America," writes Irwin.
"In 1934, with Greenberg,
Gehringer, Goslin and guys heading
to the pennant, the town was baseball
hungry and Bingay was urged to write
about the Tigers. He had a Freep
(Detroit Free Press) cartoonist sketch a
whiskered old coot and doped out
Tiger stuff. Iffy appeared in 1935 and
1940 on a regular basis and Bingay
brought him back in mid-1944 and
all of 1945. While others tried their
hand on Iffy in recent years, none had
Bingay's flair and talent." ❑
