Giving Tzedakah
By giving charity to the poor before prayer, one reminds oneself how his prayer
is similar to a helpless person pleading for mercy and kindness.

Beyond The Gift
W
hen Sarah Richard and friend
Avery Drongowski, both of
Temple Emanu-El in Oak Park, first
started planning how to honor their
respective bat mitzvahs, they knew
that doing something for the Jewish
people in Israel had to be a part of it.
For help in choosing the right proj-
ect, they turned to the Jewish Agency
for Israel's Ask JAFI, one-stop e-mail
link. The inquiry was forwarded to Tal
Bar-Lev, who thought of the Kiryat
Ye'arim youth village in Jerusalem.
After consulting with Bar-Lev, the
girls decided to collect school supplies
for the Kiryat Ye'arim children as a
yearlong project. Sarah's mother,
Karen, facilitated the gift-giving effort.
Guests at the girls' bat mitzvah
receptions were requested to bring
school supplies for Kiryat Ye'arim
instead of a more traditional bat mitz-
vah gift. In addition, the girls spent
many hours, during the year before
they became bat mitzvah collecting
donations of school supplies.
When the girls arrived in Israel on
July 21, on a family mission from the
temple, they brought three suitcases
filled with a cornucopia of school sup-
plies to present to the school directors.
"It was a wonderfully emotional
afternoon: the proud smiles of our
girls and their parents, the surprise of
the directors who never thought they'd
receive so much, and our joy in shar-
ing in this heartwarming meeting,"
said Emanu-El Rabbi Joseph Klein.
"That afternoon we were all reminded
that what is most important about
making a trip to Israel is 'people
touching people.' For an hour or so,
we were connected to the Jewish state
in ways that transcended archaeology
and history."
The Temple Emanu-El community
will continue to keep in touch with
Kiryat Ye'arim youth village through
the b'nai mitzvah projects of other
children, forging a human connection
of long-term interest and involvement.
