third elected term on the
board of education of the
Walled Lake Consolidated School
District. A director of quality assur-
ance with Sherwood Foods, he lives
with his wife and two children in
West Bloomfield and is a Temple
Israel member.
"We are seeing a growing Jewish
population in our district," he says,
basing his assessment on a marked
increase in absences on the Jewish
holidays. "Years ago, this only affect-
ed one elementary, one middle school
and one high school; now, it affects
20 of our buildings in one
way, shape or form."
The Jewish community is
one part of a growing diver-
sity in the district.
"We have over 48 differ-
ent ESL (English as a
Second Language) and ELL
(English Language
Learning) programs in our
24 buildings," he says. "It

It's a very beautiful thing.
"There is much more recognition
of the Jewish religion and it is reflect-

Orthodontist Nelson Hersh has been in Commerce since
1995 and, though he recently moved his office back into
West Bloomfield, his location at Pontiac Trail and
Haggerty roads positions him on the border of both
cities and keeps him close to Walled Lake.
"The percentage of Jews out here is steadily increas-
ing," says Dr. Hersh, giving credit to new roads as well as Dr. Hersh
the quality of the Walled Lake Consolidated School
District, which is attracting more families to the area.
"I think people like it because there is more land and less congestion. M-5
makes it so you can get to just about anywhere," he says. "I think Haggerty
will be like Orchard Lake Road is today."
