ACLU) and others who dominated the
strongly leftist-leaning board made clear
that there was no room for views other
than their own.
Therefore, the recent controversy
over Mr. Gad-Harf's apologetics in
Dearborn (clopping al chet as we say
Jewishly, or beating one's breast in apol-
ogy) should come as no surprise to the
Jewish community.
The Jewish community is not well-
served by the Jewish Comunity
Council. I resigned rather than have
my voice stifled.

Mission Of Teaching

we toured and wonderful staff from our
Federation to keep everything running
smoothly.
How do we include Israel in our cur-
riculum? How do we bring our experi-
ence back home? It all seems too simple
to me now: Israel is our curriculum.
Teaching Hebrew, teaching Torah and
teaching chagim are part of the big pic-
ture — teaching Israel to our yeladim.

Ethiopian Welcome

On behalf of Shalom Street and the
new Ethiopian Village Exhibit on the
grounds of the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield, we want to
thank you.
We opened Sunday, July 10, and it
was a wonderful day. We had a steady
stream of visitors and their comments
were overwhelmingly positive. Our
first-day attendance was enhanced by
the wonderful spread in the Jewish
News ("People Of The Book," June 30,
page 21). Story Development Editor
Keri Guten Cohen wrote so eloquently
and described the true flavor of this
experience. The poster insert is beauti-
ful and descriptive of our exhibit and
the Detroit connection through PACT
Netanya.
We had more than 1,000 people
come to our "Diggin' in Israel" exhibit
last year over a six-week period. We
have the same expectation for success
with this exhibit and even greater num-
bers as it will be open until Sept. 29.
We hope all of our Detroit families will
come to share this experience. We will be
happy to give them all a special welcome.

Congregation Excellence ("Long-Range
Cheering," July 7, page 15).
I was one of the teachers on the team
mission to Israel June 19 to July 1. Our
Federation/Alliance for Jewish
Education and Da'At Tours of Israel
put together an outstanding trip of see-
ing Israel through an educator's eye. It
was meaningful and educational for
first-timers, repeat visitors and Israelis
as well.
We visited public schools, outdoor
educational environmental centers,
where Torah is taught to school chil-
dren, and children's centers, where
Bible stories are taught using drama.
We had the opportunity to learn
with Bat Ella Birnbaum, teaching
tefillah (prayer) through music. -
We learned simple Israeli folk danc-
ing to teach our students. We also visit-
ed Neot Kedumim, a biblical nature
chair, Shalom Street
reserve, and learned ways of teaching
Bloomfield Hills
using nature. We learned a technique
called biblio-drama (a method to inter-
actively teach Bible to children).
We had sessions with educators and
