that by supporting "progres-
sive" programs in Israel, it will attract
new donors in Ann Arbor.
Included in the allocations are
$15,000 for a program to help Druze
women find employment and $10,000
for Hand in Hand, a center for Jewish
and Arab educa-
tion.

The Druze Women's Employment
Initiative is an American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee program that
provides these women with profession-
al training including catering, hair-
dressing and cosmetology.
"We're one of the only federations in
the country that supports the Druze
Women's Employment Initiative pro-
gram," said Washtenaw Federation
Executive Director Jeffrey Levin.
About $556,000, or more than one-
third of the $1.5 million raised by
Ann Arbor's Federation is allocated to
overseas programs, he said. Ann Arbor
shares a Partnership 2000 region with
Detroit in the Central Galilee.
"We took a relatively novel
approach," he said. "We're going to
use this elective funding in a way that
reflects the unique character of Ann
Arbor's Jewish community. We spent a
lot of time trying to find programs in
several specific areas: Arab-Jewish

BBYO Helps Israel

Michael Taub and Ashley Schwartz, local BBYO coordinators of community service-
social action,. present Binai Brith Youth Organization's $3,230 donation to Jodi
Tobin, Michigan co-chair of American Red Magen David for Israel. The donation
will help buy an ambulance for Israel. BBYO chapter members raised the money
through candy sales and personal donations.
