his year, there were many unex-
pected surprises in the AZA
basketball tournament..
The first was the elimination of Al
Jolson AZA in the early rounds. Jolson
was one of the pre-tournament favorites.
Another surprise was how far Herzl
AZA, from Windsor, got in the tourna-
ment. Making it to the semifinals was a
delight for all the Herzl players, in spite
of their decisive loss to eventual champi-
on Chazak, 55-4.
But the biggest surprise was the defeat
of Shapiro AZNs 'A" team by the
underdogs of Chazak, from Huntington
Woods.
The tournament final was held at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield. Shapiro A beat fellow chap-
ter members Shapiro C to make it to the
championship game.
The championship contest displayed
an unbelievable amount of talent and
superior sportsmanship. Ben
Chesterman led Chazak, scoring 27 of
the team's 44 points. The final score was
Chazak 44, Shapiro 36.
AZA Athletic Chairman Eric Dropkin
was "highly impressed with the sports-
manship and effort of all the players. I
couldn't have asked for a better year."
