has done a fine job.
There is much to like about Yotsuba
... The striking interior and a dedica-
tion to good Japanese food ... Because
of these, its customer base has become
one of many-time returns.
FORMER DETROITER Sheryll
Bellman is one lucky gal.... Cindy
Adams, New York Post columnist, was
invited to write the forward for Sheryll's
book coining out this fall, America's
Great Delis: Recipes and Traditions from
Coast to Coast, but had to beg off.
A good thing because Cindy knows
little about delicatessens, especially
outside of New York ... Her late hus-
band, Joe Adams, comic writer, joke
book author (Strictly For Laughs) and
columnist traveled extensively and was
so well-versed in deli lore that he fre-
quently quipped about them in his
popular pennings ... much of Joey's
material Cindy is proud to use.
He would have loved writing the
forward for Sheryll.
Both Darbys and Boesky's will
appear in the book ... along with
many favorite delicatessens of yester-
years and today.
Hope the folks behind the excellent
Jewish Book Fair at the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit this year will have Sheryll here
for their always fine event ... If they
need the ex-Detroiter's New York e-
mail address or phone number, I'll be
happy to forward either or both to
them.
America's Great Delis: Recipes and
Traditions from Coast to Coast should
be a big seller.
TRUE ISRAELI FOOD doesn't get
too much more authentic than an
Israeli mother's cooking for her family
... and this is what folks going to
Yossi's Israeli Cuisine in West
Bloomfield's Robin's Nest are getting
until the end of May.
Owner Yossi Benyamin's mother,
Rachel Benyamin, here from Haifa
with his father, Nadir, loves to cook,
and is in Yossi's Israeli Cuisine kitchen
making her specialties like Sambusak,
among many of her homemade
favorites ... Yossi serves her excellent
recipe. for cholent every Saturday
night, but while she is here, his moth-
er will make the great dish.
BEING DIAGNOSED WITH a
disease is bad enough, let alone it
being one without a known cure.
But Joe Rothenberg, 30-year veteran
of the wine business, former owner of
Clover Wine Cellaz and then, before
retiring, selling the vino to restaurants
for L & L Wine World in Royal Oak,
had only one thing in mind ... helping
others with the same dreaded illness.
And so was born a wonderful fund-
raiser for ALS of Michigan (Lou
Gehrig's Disease) ... with what Joe
knows best, the holding of a wine-tast-
ing event.
It's the Third Annual ALS of
Michigan's Friends of Wine Tasting &
Auction, 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 18,
at Ford Motor Co. Conference and
Event Center in Dearborn.
Joe and friend Scott Mansfield, with
whom he worked at L & L, are co-
founders and chairmen of the annual
fund-raiser with $125 including wine
tasting from top wineries, dinner by
Opus One, auction of premier col-
lectible wines, dining packages, etc.
For more info, call Sue Burstein
Kahn, ALS of Michigan executive
director, (800) 882-5764.
By the way, folks can get a head
start on others by going to
www.alsofmi.org and bidding on auc-
tion items from now until June 15.
OWNERS OF Frankenmuth's
Bavarian Inn, Dorothy and Bill
Zehnder, aren't the only ones with 55-
year longevity there ... They also have
a couple of employees who were hired
the same day back in 1950 ... Marie
Fechter, waitress, hostess, etc., and
Virgil Diamond, restaurant jack-of-all-
trades maintenance manager.
CONGRATS ... To Sarah Bacow on
her birthday, celebrated with table for
seven at Sposita's in West Bloomfield.
GET WELL WISHES ... to
Blanche Duke, recuperating at home
after stay at Beaumont Hospital.
QUESTION & ANSWER DEPT.
... Q. "I happen to love a good mus-
tard omelet and have to make it
myself. My wife says that I am a
strange eater. Is this so odd?" ...
Norman K.
A. It's not the norm, Norm, but
heck, if someone loves mustard that
much, why not in an omelet? ... I
remember years back when the late
much-revered local orchestra leader
Sammy Woolf just about helped keep
the Heinz and Snider companies in
business with his love of catsup ... He
put it on everything he ate and proba-
bly enjoyed a good catsup omelet ...
There used to be a breakfast spot years
ago that bragged about featuring over
100 kinds of omelets ... Some of them
sounded like concoctions you wouldn't
feet to a stray dog ... You should
excuse the expression, Norm, but it
didn't cut the mustard, so went out of
business.
