once told an interviewer, "that the
constant presence in the press of the
sins of Catholic priests, especially in
the U.S., is a planned campaign."
Sister Jeannine Gramick, a nun he
ordered to stop ministering to gays
and lesbians in the United States,
called his election "devastating" for
those who believe the Catholic
Church needs to be more tolerant.
Still, in 2002, he authorized the
publication of a report that stated,
"The Jewish messianic wait is not in
vain." That document also expressed
regret that certain passages in the
Christian Bible condemning individ-
ual Jews have been used to justify anti-
Semitism.
Rabbi Charles Rosenzveig, founder
and executive director of the
Holocaust Memorial Center in
Farmington Hills, said he did not
recall the German Catholic church
having a good record during the
Holocaust, but Cardinal Ratzinger's
work with interfaith relations is con-
sidered a plus.
"I think being of German origin, he
may be more sensitive to the Jewish
issue," Rabbi Rosenzveig said.
Sharona Shapiro, Michigan area
director of the American Jewish
Committee, agreed.
"I'm very hopeful," she said. "This is
an experienced individual in the realm
of interfaith relations. He has a lot of
experience in working with national
Jewish organizations, and I think he
will ... help the church go even fur-
ther. He's very much committed to
continuing the relationship." ❑
