name of Pope Benedict XVI on
Tuesday, "the architect of the policy
that Pope John Paul II fulfilled with
regard to relations with the Jews. He is
the architect of the ideological policy
to recognize, to have full relations with
Israel."
Cardinal Ratzinger succeeds John
Paul, who died April 2. He is the first
German pope since the 11th century.
He grew up in heavily Catholic
Bavaria.
In his memoirs, Cardinal Ratzinger
wrote that, at 14, he was enrolled in
the Nazi youth movement against his
will. That was 1941, when member-
ship was mandatory. He soon was
released because he was studying for
the priesthood.
Two years later, he was drafted into
because deserters were shot immedi-
ately if caught, or publicly hanged as
examples to others.
When he arrived home, U.S. sol-
diers took him prisoner and held him
in a POW camp for several weeks.
Upon his release, he re-entered the
seminary.
The Vatican's chief theologian under
John Paul II, Cardinal Ratzinger, 78,
is considered a conservative, whose
actions include a letter of advice last
year to U.S. bishops on denying com-
munion to politicians who support
abortion rights, which some observers
viewed as a slam at then-Democratic
presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry.
He also accused the media of fueling
the priest sex abuse scandals of recent
years. "I am personally convinced," he
