Student raises money for diabetes group.

ro
hillip Gross of West Bloomfield is like many 13-year-olds. He enjoys
swimming, reading books and playing video games. Like his peers,
he spent much of the past year preparing for his bar mitzvah, cele-
brated March 19 at Congregation B'nai Moshe.
One of his mitzvah projects represented a personal mission for Phillip,
son of ivlarina and Isaak Gross. He campaigned at his Walled Lake Middle
School to raise money and public awareness for the American Diabetes
Association.
At last year's annual Walk for Diabetes fund-raiser, sponsored by the asso-
ciation, Phillip raised $150. "I solicited pledges from students at lunchtime
because that's the best time to catch them, as well as teachers," said Phillip.
The reason for his continued interest in supporting the association is very
personal — Phillip was diagnosed five years ago with type I diabetes, or
insulin-dependent.
Mrs. Gross admitted that getting used to managing his diabetes was diffi-
cult at first, but there have been no limits on his activities — including his
favorite sport of swimming, as well as playing violin and piano.
Besides raising money at the annual ADA walks, Phillip attends ADA
camps for young diabetics and has made many friends.

When Phillip was diagnosed at the
age of 8, he said it was "annoying"
because of the required four blood
tests a day, done by pricking a finger
to draw a drop of blood and obtaining
a reading of his blood sugar level.
Later, he realized he has to go
through that routine for the rest of his
life. Now, he is used to it.
When her son was first diagnosed,
Mrs. Gross admitted that she "cried a
lot," asking herself, "what did he do
(to deserve this)? But we decided to
move on and deal with it."
Phillip was also involved in other
mitzvah projects. He prepared pack-
ages for Berkley-based Yad Ezra, which
distributes kosher food to low-income
Jewish families, and solicited donations
for the world-wide tsunami disaster
relief drive.
