Lee Garden presents an enjoyable expe-
rience.
THREE OF ITS many wonderful
features in a fine reputation ... excellent
food, superior service and magnificent
ambience ... combined still again in
showing why Cafe Cortina is ranked
among America's top Italian restaurants.
This time, more than 70 people
attended another grand display of ele-
gant cuisine served by teams of waitper-
sons each presenting the lavish dining
display concurrently ... coupled with
paired wines and the launch of
Academia Barilla's latest elite brands of
olive oils, balsamic vinegars and pro-
sciutto. It was hosted by Cafe Cortina,
Farmington Hills; Academia Barilla,
manufacturer of Italian foods in Italy,
and Cauley Ferrari Maserati in West
Bloomfield.
The magnificent vinegars range from
$14 to $150, and can be gotten at
Cauley, Hiller's Markets, Nino Salvaggio
and Papa Joe's.
WHEN ORDERING one of the big
lobster favorites at Shangri-La in West
Bloomfield's Orchard Mall, ask your
server for lobster with ginger and green
onions ... That's the delicious dish so
many folks are talking about ... If you
ask for Lobster Cantonese, you'll get it
with chopped meat and vegetable and
covered with black bean sauce ... The
cut-up and cracked lobster with ginger
and scallions comes on a bed of luscious
soft angel hair noodles.
YOU MIGHT RECOGNIZE one
of the waiters at Carl's Chop House on
Grand River in Detroit and wonder
what he is doing away from Las Vegas.
Max Igol has been at Carl's four years
after working in Las Vegas, but not as a
waiter ... The nephew of Boris and
Gary Greisdorf, is the same gent who
years back fitted so many with glasses at
Metropolitan Optical in Orchard Mall.
Max had left the optical game for
school in Nevada to learn dealing cards
and wound up in Las Vegas as a black-
jack dealer at El Cortez and Nevada
Club and poker at the Four Queens.
WHILEPERFORMING at the old
Town Pump on Cass in Detroit years
ago, among other spots here, "Saucy
Sylvia" Stoun used to wow the audience
with her comedy and song at their
pianos ... Today as "Saucy Sylvia"
Mureddu, she is still going strong, 60
years later.
Her DVD Here's Sauey! takes in the
evolution of a career that spans these
many years ... and includes much
footage of "Saucy" in action behind the
piano with an amazing memory for
names and lyrics.
SOME OF THE concoctions were

different and contained items seldom
seen in the popular dish ... But the
judges sorted things out and selected
three winners from the 14 entries in the
Second Annual Kevin Sofferin
Memorial Chili Cook-Off at Temple
Emanu-El in Oak Park ... Karen
Richards took first prize, Greg Sleeman
was second and Terry Selman third ...
Judging was by Oak Park Mayor Gerald
Naftaly, Jerry Milen, 95.5 FM, and
myself
CONGRATS ... To Hersh Gross on
his 57th birthday ... celebrated at
Hersh's Clippers Barber Salon in
Southfield's Applegate Square with deli-
cious cake made by Kelly Anderson,
Clippers' upper-body masseuse.
MAIL DEPT ... "Charleston is great.
I see an average of three to four
Detroiters a week and the restaurant is
what people are calling my "grand
slam," referring to Tapawingo, Tribute
and now the Charleston Grill. It is awe-
some and the food incredibly good." ...
Mickey Bakst, former maitre d' and
manager at Tribute.
TRIBUTE'S FORMER executive
chef Takashi Yagahashi will open the
new Okada, one of 18 restaurants at the
new Wynn Las Vegas Hotel in April ...
At $2.5 billion, it will be Las Vegas'
most expensively built ... Steve Wynn's
former Bellagio cost $1.2 billion.
WHERE THEY ARE DEPT ... Lou
DeCillis, former owner of Savino Ices,
then Savino Frozen Desserts with its fat-
free ice cream, a business he built into a
giant from a little 800-square-foot ice
cream and sherbet shop ... He is now
owner of Artistic Flooring Systems in
Bloomfield Hills, doing industrial, com-
mercial and residential concrete stain
and epoxy flooring.

QUESTION & ANSWER DEPT

Q "My wife and I keep a kosher
home and used to love the Chinese
food at Bernstein-On-Essex Street in
New York. Did you ever eat there? ...
And is it true that a restaurant like it is
supposed to open in Royal Oak" ...
Lawrence D.
A. ... I sure did, and also enjoyed it,
especially the Chicken Bernstein stuffed
with bamboo shoots, water chestnuts
and pastrami and covered with Chinese
vegetables ... About the restaurant pur-
portedly opening in Royal Oak, no,
nothing like Shmulka Bernstein's place,
but word is that a kosher restaurant
with a sushi bar is supposed to open at
the former location of W.O.W. on
Woodward south of 14 Mile. O
