The purpose of elastics is to move teeth into their
proper places. In doing so, elastics can correct an
over-bite, make room for crowded teeth, help relate
the upper and lower jaws together, or help in settling
the process to achieve an ideal fit or "mesh" of the

teeth. Orthodontic elastics are a great help to your
Licensed Specialist
treatment because of the neat things they can do for
your teeth, especially since they can reduce the
time you spend in braces. However, remember not all cases elastics and
your orthodontist will tell you whether your case requires them.

Teeth move only when pressure is placed on them. This is why we find
when elastics are removed, even for a short time, the teeth may stop moving
and may even back track. For this reason, part time wear will result in little
or no movement at all and thus increase the time that braces are on the
teeth. therefore, it is essential that your elastics be worn all the time. You
should ask your orthodontist if elastics should be worn during eating. If an
elastic breaks or loses its elasticity, replace it right away. You will want to
keep a pack of elastics with you.

There is usually little to no change in speech. You may have some sensitivity
to your teeth as they first get used to the pressure. This will usually last
several days and then go away completely. When patients use their elastics
according to our recommendations, we as a team have excellent success.
