STAR
DELI
IS ONE OF THE BEST CARRY OUT ONLY
RESTAURANTS IN AMERICA!
greens, seafood gumbo, corn chow-
der and potato leek soups ... plus
some of the best homemade sweet
potato cornbread muffins you have
ever tasted.
Beans & Cornbread takes soul
food to still another level ... upward
to be sure ... as it presents this time-
honored fare with the lavish touch
of exotic simplicity ... Truly a pleas-
urable adventure in good, whole-
some dining.
THE SIGN OF a highly success-
ful restaurateur who hasn't forgotten
his former years ... still pitching in
to help whenever needed is Matt
Prentice, president and CEO of the
Bingham Farms-based Matt Prentice
Restaurant Group (formerly Unique
Restaurant Corporation) behind the
-counter each week at his Plaza Deli
on Northwestern Highway in
Southfield.
It is still quite difficult to believe
that the little deli he took over in
1980 on Greenfield and 10 Mile in
Oak Park, renamed and refined, has
today grown to a 12-restaurant,
casual and fine-dining operation ...
But seeing that Matt has never
seemed to change as a person is even
more wonderful.
CLASS CARRIED over again for
the Chinese New Year celebration at
Hong Hua in Farmington Hills ...
Around 200 celebrated the Chinese
year of the rooster in fine style with
elegant decorations, a crisp good
luck U.S. dollar bill in an envelope
for everyone, DJ and karaoke music,
lion dance, open bar, appetizers and
sumptuous dinner.
RESTAURANT WINNER for the
best food and pairing at the recent
Michigan Culinary Food & Wine
Extravaganza was Steve & Rocky's
on Grand River in Novi ... The
judges picked its firm and tasty pan-
seared sea scallop Rockefeller paired
with a sub-par Sonoma Cueter wine
Attend-ance count was around
600, with event for culinary scholar-
ships raising about $30,000.
Until 2002, Steve & Rocky's was
always a bridesmaid or usher, but
never a bride or groom ... Then win-
ning top honors again ... after
almost always ranking in the top five
since the MCF&WE began.
The 2005 judges were. Sylvia
Rector, Detroit Free Press; Linda
Bachrack, Style Magazine; Doug
Levy, Oakland Press; Brent Snavely,
Craine's Detroit Business; Debbi
Komar, Macomb Daily; and myself.
LAST DAY OF camping for regu-
lars at Camp Nehelu, the fine former
Jewish camp at Ortonville, near
Camp Tamarack, was in 1975, but it
hasn't been forgotten ... even though
soon to to make room for a subdivi-
sion.
A reunion for anybody who ever
worked there or attended camp since
its beginning, around 1940, is being
held the Sunday of Memorial Day
weekend (May 29) by former camper
Fran Gurwin Bell and other previous
attendees and employees.
Some of the ex-camp grads are
Lew and Regine Schulman, 1954
founders of Camp Sea Gull, who
met at Camp Nehelu when Lew was
head counselor and Regina a cabin
counselor, Nancy Klopper,
Hollywood casting director (Cheaper
By The Dozen and Risky Business)
and producer Sam Raimi
(Spiderman).

WHERE THEY ARE Dept. ...
Chef Terry Shuster, executive chef
16 years at Fox & Hounds on
Woodward in Bloomfield Hills, is
now preparing his wonderful gour-
met dishes for the residents as chef
de cuisine at the Fox Run
Retirement Community in Novi.
PEOPLE TALK About Dept. ...
The Romantica Salad at Romantica
Italian restaurant in Applegate
Square, Northwestern and Inkster,
Southfield ... Looks like the chef for-
got to stop piling everything on ...
and hear tell that it is one of the
best salad deals in town.
QUESTION & ANSWER
DEPT.: Q. "Too many people to
name them all that ask where they
can get something to eat after the-
ater, sporting events, etc., hours."
A. Owners Tom and Margarita
Spagna's 48-seater restaurant is one
of the few places that have a juicy
kosher all-beef Coney ($2.25) ...
Also one of the best homemade
baklavas around, only chopped wal-
nuts used, no corn syrup or sugar,
just some honey and very light phyl-
lo dough ... and excellent spinach
pie ... Both made by Margarita.
READERS' NOTE ... Requests
