King Speaker Talks Global

Shabbat Limits Cafe Hours

A Michigan State University senior from
Bloomfield Hills spoke of the Jewish
people as a global community at a cam-
pus Martin Luther King Jr. Celebratory
Community Dinner.
"The Jewish people hail from nearly
every country on Earth, from Argentina
to America, India to Israel, England to
Ethiopia and everywhere in between,"
said David Dworin,
vice president of
communications of
the MSU Hillel
Jewish Student
Union at the Jan.
17 event.
Reviewing the
accomplishments of
Jewish people in a
global society,
Dworin noted sev-
Dworin
eral of the 164
Jewish Nobel Prize
winners, such as
Dr. Jonas Salk, who developed the polio
vaccine; Albert Einstein, who discovered
the theory of general relativity; Jerry
Siegel and Joe Shuster, who created the
comic strip character Superman; and
moviemaker Steven Spielberg, whose
body of work includes Schindlers List,
the story of the Holocaust and a right-
eous gentile, Oskar Schindler.
Racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia
and bigotry have not disappeared, said
Dworin, 20. "Jim Crow may be gone,
but the sentiments, feelings, and atti-
tudes still linger. AIDS, malaria and pre-
ventable illness, civil war and even geno-
cide kill millions per year," he said.
"Our generation has opportunities for
travel, for communication, that never
existed for our parents, or even our
immediate predecessors," he added.
"It is our responsibility to make the
most of these opportunities. We need to
start building bridges now so that future
generations have something with which
to cross over."

Jerusalem/JTA— The luxurious new ter-
minal at Israel's international airport has
drawn complaints for its lack of restau-
rants open on Shabbat.
Unlike the old terminal, Terminal 3
at Ben-Gurion Airport does not allow
its cafes to open on Shabbat and other
Jewish holidays. Israeli media ascribed
the new policy to refusal by the rab-
binate to grant kosher licenses to those
eateries that operate on these days.
Representatives of Lufthansa and
Austrian Airlines spoke out Monday
against the policy and were echoed by a
member of the secular opposition party
Shinui. "Those arriving at the new ter-
minal for the first time will not know
whether they are at Ben-Gurion Airport
or Tehran," lawmaker Ronni Berizon
wrote in Yediot Achronot.
Terminal 3, a marble-and-glass colos-
sus, cost Israel $1 billion.

Israel Eyes Abbas

Jerusalem/JTA — Mahmoud Abbas is
determined to halt terrorism from the
West Bank and G27A Strip, Israel's mili-
tary intelligence chief said.
But Maj. Gen. Aharon Ze'evi-Farkash
told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and
Defense Committee that while the
Palestinian Authority president favors
nonviolent tactics in pursuing a
Palestinian state, his goal is no different
than Yasser Arafat's.
"He seeks Palestinian statehood in all
of the West Bank and Gaza, with a capi-
tal in east Jerusalem," Ze'evi-Farkash
was quoted as telling the parliamentary
panel.
Abbas recently has talked Palestinian
terrorist groups into scaling back their
attacks, but Ze'evi-Farkash said this did
not constitute a cease-fire. Israel has
demanded that Abbas crack down on
terrorists as the Palestinians pledged
under the U.S.-led, road-map peace
plan and rules out a return to pre-1967
boundaries under a future peace deal.
