AJC Offers Tsunami Aid
The Metropolitan Detroit Chapter of
the American Jewish Committee has
reached out to south Asian religious
and ethnic organizations in Metro
Detroit to help organize tsunami
fund-raising events and to offer
expressions of solidarity.
On Thursday, Feb. 17, the Council of
Asian Pacific Americans and the Ritz
Carlton in Dearborn will host a benefit,
raising funds for two relief and disaster
organizations selected by the local coali-
tion of organizations who have come
together for this purpose. The American
Jewish Committee has jumpstarted the
evening's campaign by donating $5,000
toward this tsunami fund-raising effort
and has begun to help coordinate plans
for the ongoing campaign.
The evening will begin with a wine
tasting reception at 7 p.m. and will
include a silent auction and musical
program. Non-alcoholic and vegetari-
an refreshments will also be offered.
Guests are encouraged to wear ethnic
attire. Tickets begin at $100.
The coalition has selected the
American Red Cross and SOS-Youth
Villages as the local campaign's benefi-
ciaries. For information, call the
Council for Asian Pacific Americans,
(248) 515-0100.
The American Jewish Committee's
National Tsunami Relief Fund has col-
lected $800,000 to aid in rescue and
reconstruction efforts in southern and
southeast Asia, as well as east Africa.
AJC has also responded to an appeal
from the South African Jewish Board
of Deputies to assist in supporting
efforts to locate 400 missing South
Africans in the affected region, an esti-
mated one-quarter of whom are Jewish.
In addition to financial support,
AJC has written to concerned govern-
ments, including the many countries
whose citizens were on holiday in the
region and either perished or are still
unaccounted for, to express our con-
dolences and concern.
Moreover, AJC's office in Mumbai
(formerly Bombay) has been working to
assist in the relief efforts in India, aided
by Dr. David Elcott of AJC's New York
staff; who was in India at the time of
the tsunami and, after escaping from
the seashore, has stayed on to help.
To contribute to AJC's relief efforts,
donate online at www.ajc.org or send
a check payable to the AJC Tsunami
Relief Fund to AJC Tsunami Relief
Fund, 165 East 56th Street, 8th Floor,
New York, NY 10022. All donation s
will be directed to their intended use.
AJC will absorb administrative costs.
