DYNASTY? from page 43

Stewart made 10 of 14 free throws in
the game, including six straight in the
fourth. But he had plenty of help from
Sam Yashinsky's 11 points and 12
rebounds, and Matthew Kurzmann's 10
points.
Seniors Yashinsky of Farmington Hills
and Andrew Garon of Franklin are con-
tributing 12 points per game and
Yashinsky is adding nine rebounds.
New JAMD athletic director Michael
Sandweiss, Wayne Cooper and John
Walker are serving as assistant coaches
for the team.
Sandweiss believes the basketball team
is just one part of the school's success.
"We have to succeed in all areas — aca-
demics, the arts, athletics — to be a suc-
cessful school."
The basketball team's success is draw-
ing increasing attention. The team prac-
tices and plays just steps from JAMD's
classrooms in the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield. The team's
home — the new Hechtman
Gymnasium — has a large glass wall
overlooking the basketball court.
"More and more people are stopping
to watch," says Sandweiss.
The Jewish Academy played in the
state basketball tournament for the first
time last year. The team won its first
game, and faced 21-1 Warren Zoe
Christian in the second. "We lost," says
coach Shoemaker, "but only by seven
points." ❑

MIISAA, Case

The Jewish Academy's lawsuit
against the Michigan High School
Athletic Association is continuing
in Oakland County Circuit Court.
The case, scheduled to be heard
early this month, has been post-
poned until March.
JAMD sued the MHSAA last
June after the athletic association
refused to allow a state district base-
ball game to be rescheduled from a
Saturday. JAMD also won an
injunction in November when the
MHSAA refused JAIvID's annual
membership application because it
would not grant the school's waiver
request on scheduling.
