and Tom, a fine dining tradition cer-
tainly continues with much pride.

THE FORMER LONGTIME

executive chef at Mac & Ray's, Jeff
Baldwin, will sort of be at his one-
time home away from home ... This
time, though, there will be samplings
from his new J. Baldwin Restaurant
& To Go along with food and wine
from more than 20 restaurants that'll
be part of the 10th annual Mardi
Gras-themed Michigan Culinary
Food & Wine Extravaganza, Tuesday,
Feb. 8.
The usually 600-700 crowd count
is again expected for the yearly fine
event, again being held at Mac &
Ray's Banquet & Convention Center
on North River Road in Harrison
Township, 6-10 p.m. ... Money will
benefit the MCFWE Scholarship
Fund for future chefs and Blue Water
Chefs Association.
Judging of restaurant and food
pairings for the silver traveling cup,
won last year by Mac & Ray's, with
Jeff its chef, will again be "blind"
with food and wine brought to the
judges without them knowing which
restaurants they are from.
Judges will be ... Sylvia Rector,
Detroit Free Press, Kate Lawson,
Detroit News, Linda Bachrack, Style
magazine, Doug Levy, Oakland Press,
Brent Snavely, Crain's Detroit
Business, Debbi Komar, Macomb
Daily, and myself.
For $75 general admission and
$125 Gold Salon tickets, call (586)
463-9660 ... Gold Salon ducats also
include open bar, table seating and
gourmet food by Blue Water Chefs
Association members.
WOULDN'T IT BE great if the
high hopes of many folks come true
... That the second location of
Gateway Deli has touches of the for-
mer Darbys ... with folks again hav-
ing a place to go after the theater,
nitery or whatever?
Possibility looms large that owner
Peter Bershaj's second spot may also
have a new name when it takes over
in February at the present location of
Tirami-su on Orchard Lake Road,
between 13 and 14 Mile in
Farmington Hills.
MAIL DEPT. ... "I agree with you
that the best hot beef sandwich in
San Francisco is at Lefty O'Doul's.
Too bad you didn't have the hot
corned beef sandwich there. They are
almost as good as the one I used to
get at Lefkofsky's in the old
Broadway Market (torn down around
1957)" ... Leonard Wallace, CPA,
Sunnydale, California (native

Detroiter, graduate of Cass Tech and
University of Michigan, past regional
vice president of B'nai B'rith and a
Californian since 1956.)
THEY CALL THEMSELVES the
"Monday Night Girls" ... eight lassies
who have been getting together every
month for the past four years to cele-
brate something ... Wendy Roth,
Adrienne Ruby-Fink, Freddie
Horvith, Sharon Raylor, Ronna
Hoffert, Sandi Wolfe, Jackie Layne
and Joann Kraft ... It's usually at a
variety of restaurants, but one of
their favorites is Brasserie Zinc in
West Bloomfield, where seven of the
eight (Joann was in Palm Beach,
Florida checking on a flood at her
P.B. home) had their own little
friendship celebration to bring in the
new year.

"The best tuna ish in North America."

QUESTION & ANSWER DEPT.

... "Can you tell us why the long
delay in opening the new Honey Tree
restaurant" Thanks!" ... Sam
Jassenoff.
A. "You are one of many who have
asked, Sam, but thankfully it won't
be too much longer now before
George's Honey Tree opens at its new
location on Northwestern Highway
in West Bloomfield ... It'll be like
night and day difference from the
other place, with 180 seating instead
of the cramped 100 which owner
George Lukaj never did like ... He
enjoys plenty of space for his cus-
tomers ... There'll also be an expand-
ed menu.
Seems that the OKs by the West
Bloomfield fire marshal and Oakland
County Health Division depended
on their final inspections, which are
soon forthcoming since it is a new
restaurant with all new equipment
and thorough code adherences ... It
costs owners plenty of moola in rent,
insurance, etc. when inspectors take
their sweet old time ... and they can't
recoup a dime because the restaurant
isn't even open yet.
Q "Is Piero's restaurant in Las
Vegas as good as they say? Where is
it located? And do we need a reserva-
tion?" ... Marian Ressler.
A. I don't know what they say, but
it sure is a wonderful Italian restau-
rant ... Piero's, owned by Freddy
Glusman, is off the beaten path and
away from the Strip, at 55
Convention Center ... No, you don't
need a reservation, but I definitely
recommend that you make one. ❑
