Allen Menuck
Menuck joined Curtis Building Co.,
founded after World War II by his father
and uncle, after he graduated from
Wayne State University.
The firm began in 1945 by building
1,000-square-foot homes priced at
$9,900. Today, Curtis
builds homes as large
as 5,000 square feet
and prices range from
$200,000 to more
than $1 million.
Menuck is joined
in the business by his
Menuck
brother Melvin and
sons Michael, Mark
and Craig. The firm has built homes
and condominiums in Farmington Hills,
West Bloomfield, Ypsilanti, Livonia,
Northville, Scio and Lyon Townships,
Canton, Plymouth, Southgate,
Woodhaven, Lake Orion and Rochester
Hills.
Jason Levy
Levy's roots in the
building industry are
deep. His grandfather
Mark was a BIA
founder.
Levy doesn't work
Levy
directly in the build-
ing industry, but
many builders are his clients. He's an
account executive at Global Office
Solutions in Novi. He has managed the
design, layout and furnishings for busi-
nesses, homes and sales center offices for
many of the BINs top builders.
Levy is on the BIA board and recruit-
ed 75 new BIA members as part of the
membership committee. He was vice
chair of the BIA Council in 2003 and
was named chair this year.
Lester Burton
Burton, 90, was hon-
ored for nearly 60
years of affiliation
with the BIA and its
predecessor, the
Builders Association
of Southeastern
Burton
Michigan. He shares
a "special bond" with
BIA Executive Vice President and
General Counsel Irvin H. Yackness.
Both are attorneys and have worked over
the years on many industry matters.
Burton's father, Barnett, a Russian-
born cabinet builder, founded a compa-
ny in 1912 that evolved into Burton-
Katzman Development Company, with
divisions for residential building (Abbey
Homes), land development and com-
mercial real estate.
Lester Burton graduated from Wayne
University Law School. He partnered
with Nathaniel Share to form the
Burton-Share Company, which began
building scattered-site homes in Detroit.
As the company grew, they began devel-
oping large tracts in many municipali-
ties, from St. Clair Shores to Flint.
Working with Yackness, Burton
helped establish the State Licensing
Board. He became its first chairman and
served eight terms. He also became
chairman of the Homeowners Warranty
Program, arbitrating disputes between
builders and homeowners.
In 1970, Burton was elected BIA pres-
ident. He was Builder of the Year in
1980 and won the Hall of Fame Award
in 1985. He served as chairperson of the
Builders' Political Action Committee
and presently chairs both BINs Review
and Evaluation Committee and the
Awards Committee.
Peter Burton
A past president of
BIA and son of Lester
Burton, Peter Burton
is president of BINs
Charitable &
Educational
Foundation board.
Burton
He is president of
Burton-Katzman.
