neighborhoods," he says.
The foundation participated in the
ongoing redevelopment of Unity Park,
an older neighborhood in Pontiac.
Along with Standard Federal Bank and
Lighthouse Community Development,
it has built 52 homes in that communi-
ty. Additionally, the foundation raised
more than $1 million for educational
programs, most notably BINs carpenter
training program.
Burton chaired BINs Lighthouse
Committee because of his interest in the
issue of homelessness. He was named
Young Builder of the Year in 1981 and
Developer of the Year in 1996. He was
elected BIA president in 1999.
He currently directs Burton-Katzman's
office, industrial development and finan-
cial management and oversees one of the
largest privately held real estate portfo-
lios in the area.

Stuart Michaelson

Michaelson moves
from 2004 BIA presi-
dent to 2005 past
president. Issues
addressed during his
term include the
Michaelson
debate over "smart
growth" and BLA. sup-
port of new legislation to get more den-
sity in larger communities. It is also
working to prevent changes in the con-
struction code that would drive up
housing costs.
With 2004 being an election year,
BIA was also involved in "supporting
political candidates who will work with
the association to craft equitable solu-
tions to future challenges in the indus-
try."
Michaelson is president of the
Windmill Group, based in Farmington
Hills. He and longtime partner Sami
Harb were honored by BIA in 2002 as
Developer of the Year. They are
presently completing the fifth phase of
their Walden Woods community in
Van Buren Township. Other projects
include Kirkway Place in Novi, the
Forest at Orchard Lake in Farmington
Hills, and condos in Livonia,
Farmington Hills and downtown
Wayne.
Michaelson chairs BIA's Novi, Van
Buren Township and Farmington Hills
task forces. He was BIA first vice presi-
dent in 2003 and as secretary, vice pres-
ident and treasurer in past years. He
was awarded the Builder Spike in 2003
for increasing BIA membership.

Sheldon Gordon

Gordon became presi-
dent of the Apartment
Association of
Michigan in
September.
In the mid-1960s,
his father, Joe, and the Gordon
family built Madison
Park Apartments in
Madison Heights. Those 96 units have
grown to 2,000 owned and managed by
Gordon Management.
Several years ago, Sheldon and his
brother Fred relocated their offices to the
same Main Street building in Royal Oak
that were occupied by Joe Gordon's
Gordon Clothiers for over 50 years.
Sheldon Gordon studied business at
Michigan State University and graduat-
ed from Wayne State University Law
School in 1963. His career in apartment
development began in 1965. His portfo-
lio now includes 12 apartment commu-
nities in Royal Oak, Madison Heights,
Harrison Township, Grand Rapids, Big
Rapids, Midland and Ypsilanti, and sev-
eral commercial and office properties.

George Nyman

Nyman is immediate
past president of the
Apartment
Association of
Michigan. He led
AAIVI for five years.
While the low inter-
Nyman
est rates have helped
new home construc-
tion, the rental market has suffered.
Under his leadership, AAM addressed
falling occupancy rates by offering sales
and marketing education for its mem-
bers and hosting numerous networking
opportunities for AAM members.
With state and local budget cuts,
AAM has been fighting legislation and
ordinances which seek to increase gov-
ernment revenue via inspections.
As president of Professional Property
Management in Troy, Nyman and his
team manage more than 5,000 apart- •
ment units and 1 million square feet of
shopping center and industrial space in
Michigan. He founded Professional
Property Management 30 years ago after
working first at Arthur King Real Estate
in Detroit and then at Seligman &
Associates, where he started in financing
and marketing.
He earned his B.A. degree at what is
now Lawrence Technological
University.
