Age" guy who long ago gave up his
law practice to stay at home and raise
his son. He's a sharp contrast to Polo's
father (Robert De Niro), a macho ex-
CIA agent.
Stiller's mother (BARBRA
STREISAND in her first movie in
eight years — Stiller called her person-
ally and persuaded her to take the
part) makes her living by teaching sex-
ual yoga techniques to senior citizens.
Meanwhile, Polo's mother (Blythe
Danner) is a tasteful, if somewhat
ditzy WASP matron.
The stellar cast — Jewish actors
SHELLY BERMAN and TIM
BLAKE NELSON have supporting
roles — should be able to overcome
material that is awfully familiar by
now — think Dharma and Greg and
most of Stiller's movies for the last
four years.

Ghost World

"And you know what was weird?
Somehow I felt safe, and I don't know
why. I'm Jewish and from Detroit. But
I did not feel at all threatened."
So said veteran actress LIN SHAPE,
co-starring in the upcoming horror
film 2001 Maniacs, about the scary
goings-on around the set of the film.
Shaye, best known for playing
Cameron Diaz's oversexed neighbor in
There's Something About Mary, told
SCI-FI Newswire that Maniacs was
made on the site of a Georgia outdoor
museum of historic buildings — some
are supposed to be haunted.
It seemed to Shaye that the ghosts
were real. On top of that, some
Confederate "re-enactors" refused to
be in the film, and one "put a curse"
on the movie. After the curse was
issued, Shaye said, an assistant director
was injured and had to leave the film.
A little later, minor mishaps sidelined
the director and another actress for a
time.
Starring Robert (Nightmare on Elm
Street) Englund, Maniacs should open
sometime next year. I
