Lemony Snicket

The National Board of Review just
announced its 2004 awards, and
they're seen as an Oscar preview.
Jewish winners include
actress/singer EMMY ROSSUM (for
best breakthrough performance for
The Phantom of the Opera, opening in
selected cities in late December);
MICHAEL MANN (best director,
Collateral); ZACH BRAFF (best
breakthrough director, Garden State)
and CHARLIE KAUFMAN (best
screenplay, Eternal Sunshine of the
Spotless Mind).
Board members get to see films that
haven't yet been released, so the omis-
sion of any awards for Spanglish, a
highly anticipated comedy by JAMES
L. BROOKS (As Good As It Gets),
starring ADAM SANDLER, isn't
good news for the flick. It opens
Dec.17.
Mann's Collateral was named one
the top 10 films of 2004. Also making
the cut were films by Jewish directors
MIKE NICHOLS (Closer) and MIKE
LEIGH, our Brit landsman ( Vera
Drake).

On Dec. 17, the first film taken from
the best-selling Lemony Snicket chil-
dren's books by DANIEL HANDLER
will open, and we'll see if Lemony can
match up with Harry Potter at the film
box office.
Handler, an observant Jew, recently
told an interviewer: "Lemony is quite
openly Jewish. We're not trying to pull
a Madeleine Albright here. Like any-
one with Jewish ancestry and an
overeducated world view, Lemony's
life is rife with misfortune." Handler
went on to say that he and his wife
maintain "a Jewish home."
An impressive cast, including Jim
Carrey and Meryl Streep, star in
Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate
Events. Member of the tribe BRAD
SIBERLING directs.

Las Vegas' Jewish mayor OSCAR
GOODMAN has confirmed that he
is in talks with three major reality
show producers to create a show star-
ring himself. The Las Vegas Journal
newspaper jokes that titles are already
flying around, like Survival in Sin
City.
Goodman, who was once named
one of the top 15 lawyers in the coun-
try by the National Law Journal, was
known for his flamboyant style as a
courtroom defense attorney and
should be a natural for reality TV. He
already has a film credit for a small
part in Casino.
Goodman refuses to state the prem-
ise of any of the reality shows but did
joke that he wanted Arnold
Schwarzenegger to play him if a bio-
pic about him is ever made.
Meanwhile, hoping to prolong his
15 minutes is Jewish hunk ETHAN
ZOHN, the winner of a Survivor
series a couple of years ago. Zohn will

Focker Fever

Opening Dec. 22 is Meet the Fockers,
the sequel to the 2000 comedy hit
Meet the Parents. In Parents, nebbishy
Jewish male nurse BEN STILLER
("Greg Focker") and his beautiful
WASP girlfriend (Teri Polo) went to
Detroit to meet her parents. There
was a clash of cultures, mostly played
for its comedic value, between Stiller
and his girlfriend's "white-bread" fam-
ily.
In Fockers, Stiller and Polo travel to
Miami to meet Stiller's parents —
Bernie and Roz Focker. Bernie, played
by DUSTIN HOFFMAN, is a "New
