British comedian. Starring
Geoffrey Rush as Sellers, the
flick featured English Jewish
actress MIRIAM MARGOLYES
as Sellers' Jewish mother.
Brit Jewish actors STEPHEN
FRY and HENRY GOODMAN
played supporting roles.
As the film makes clear, Sellers
was an intensely moody man
who was more comfortable
assuming a role than dealing
with "real life." His mother came
from a working class Sephardi
family. His father wasn't Jewish.
While Peter was not raised in
any faith, his sense of himself as
Jewish was one of the few things
that always defined him.
His friend, Lord Snowden, the
former husband of Princess
Margaret, recently told a British
paper that Sellers' second mar-
riage to a "posh" woman wasn't
happy because "he married her
in character. He married her as
an English aristocrat. And when
he was on honeymoon he sud-
denly came out of the character,
and he disappeared."
Snowden went on to recall a
dinner party at Sellers' home in
which this wife chided him,
"Don't you know the correct way
to pass the port?" Sellers explod-
ed, "No I [bleeping] don't. I'm a
[bleeping] Jewish actor!" 7
