before and after lighting candles.
Daily prayers include Al ha-Nisim in
the Amidah (the silent, standing
prayer) and in Birkat Ha-Mazon
(grace after meals); the full Hallel
prayer is recited each day.
In the synagogue, there is a special
Torah reading for each day (Numbers
7-8:4), and four persons are called up
to read. Chanukah straddles the two
Jewish months of Kislev and Tevet.
The sixth day is also Rosh Chodesh
Kislev (the first day of the month) and
includes an additional Torah reading.
On Shabbat, the weekly Torah por-
tion is read with the Chanukah maftir.
A special Haftorah for Chanukah is
read (Zechariah 2:14-4:7).
• Customs And Traditions: Many like
to sing Maoz Tzur, while some also
recite Psalm 30. Women do not work
while the Chanukah lights are burning
— so husbands and children, feel free
to do the dishes.
The favorite holiday fare: potato
pancakes (latkes) fried in oil and
topped with sour cream, applesauce or
sugar, depending on family tradition.
Israelis eat jelly doughnuts called suf
ganiyot.
Children play dreidel, a spinning
top inscribed with a Hebrew letter on
each of four sides. The game is played
for chocolate coins, candy or nuts.
Each player takes a turn at spinning.
Depending on which Hebrew letter
turns up when the dreidel stops, the
player either gets or gives to the pot.
• Events Associated With Chanukah:
The story of Judith, and also the story
of Hannah and Her Seven Sons.
Judith is found in the Book of Judith;
Hannah comes from the Second Book
Maccabees.1

Come with your sense of humor
to this site, where you'll find puz-
zles, games and Chanukah music.
You can print out puzzles, like
Candle Power, where you wander
through a puzzle path to spell out
the word "candle," and play the
Dreidelmatic 5765, a slot machine,
of sorts, with Chanukah and Jewish
images.
