• When The Holiday Occurs: This
year, Chanukah begins at sundown
Tuesday, Dec. 7, and lasts for eight
days. On the Jewish calendar,
Chanukah starts on the 25th of Kislev.
• What The Holiday
Commemorates: Chanukah celebrates
the victory of the Jews, led by mem-
bers of the Hasmonean family —
notably Judah Maccabee — over the
Greco-Syrians (Seleucids) in 164
B.C.E. The Seleucids repressed the
practice of Judaism and converted the
Holy Temple in Jerusalem into a
house of pagan worship. The
Hasmoneans restored the Temple and
its altar.
Chanukah is the
Hebrew word for "ded-
ication" and comes
from the phrase,
chanukat ha-mizbay-
ach,"dedication of

the altar."
• How We Celebrate: Kindle lights
(oil is better, but most people use can-
dles) in a menorah, lighting progres-
sively each night (one candle the first
night, two the second, and so on).
Though the menorah is the most
popular symbol of the holiday,
Chanukah lights do not have to be in
a menorah. It is permissible to light
them in individual holders that have
been lined up.
It is preferable to place the lights in
a window facing the street for the sake
of pirsumey nisah, publicizing the mir-
acle, but the menorah also may be
placed within the house where it can
be observed by all members of the
household.
• Rules And Regulations: Chanukah
lights must be lit after sundown only,
except before Shabbat. The lights may
not be used for anything other than
display. Candles are placed in the
menorah from right to left, but are lit
from left to right (the newest candle
first, then to the right).
Unlike the major Jewish holidays,
Chanukah is not considered sacred
time and thus has no restrictions on
the use of electricity, vehicles, han-
dling money, etc. On Friday evening,
light the Chanukah candles before
lighting Shabbat candles. The
Chanukah lights must be sufficient to
burn 1 /, hour into Shabbat.
