As an important step in continuing
the tradition, Dr. Greenspan and I
organized a "halachik dinner," an exotic
kosher event that included locusts for
dessert and a lecture by Dr. Amar
accompanied by live locusts to explain
and transmit the tradition. It must be
kept in mind that the last Israeli locust
plague had been in 1959, and thus the
numbers of those who had actually
eaten locusts were dwindling.
As part of the continuing effort,
within the last year, Dr. Amar pub-
lished a book called Locusts in the Jewish
Tradition (Hebrew; Bar-Ilan University
Press). Dr. Greenspan and I, in con-
junction with the Orthodox Union,
organized a conference and dinner in
New York. Locusts were not served, but
they were discussed in the presence of
live specimens and of recent Yemenite
immigrants who described the tradi-
tions of eating them.
None of us had ever seen a live
swarm other than in the movies. But
locusts travel by effortlessly riding on
the wind. On Oct. 31, I heard that
parts of the huge African plague had
blown across the Mediterranean and
were swarming in Cyprus. Not know-
ing that in less than two weeks they
would invade Israel for the first time in
55 years, we hurried for a day to
Cyprus to observe this terrifying won-
der of nature. We observed an awesome
sight that would soon be featured in
every Israeli newspaper and on all the
TV stations. When they did arrive in
Israel, Zohar arranged a class trip for
one of his courses. A busload of his stu-
dents traveled to the infected area, col-
lected 50 locusts, and grilled and ate
them.
From our perspective, it is fantastic.
Fortunately, the locusts are doing mini-
mal damage due to the cold and rain.
The current weather, rather than the
intensive pesticide spraying, will proba-
bly stop the plague. But its appearance
has re-ignited interest in the subject of
the kashrut of locusts. The older gener-
anon has been educating the younger,
and the media has given full coverage
to this lesser known aspect of the
kosher laws. We are witnessing "living
Judaism," as another set of traditions is
being preserved and actively transmit-
ted to the next generation. II
