A group of noted scholars, theologians,
and other experts will convene at the
Holocaust Memorial Center in
Farmington Hills Sunday for the Second
Academic Conference on Altruism.
Organized by the HMC's
International Institute of the Righteous
under director Dr. Guy Stern, the con.-
ference will include keynote addresses by
two renowned scholars, Hans-Werner
Bierhoff and Kirsten Renwick Monroe.
Monroe is professor of political sci-
ence and philosophy at the University of
California-Irvine, where she directs the
Interdisciplinary Center for the
Scientific Study of Ethics and Morality.
Her books include The Heart of
Altruism: Perceptions of a Common
Humanity which was nominated for a
Pulitzer Prize, and her latest, The Hand
of Compassion.
Bierhoff is professor and head of the
department of social psychology at
Ruhr-University in Bochum, Germany,
having also served on the faculty at the
University of Bonn and the University
of Marburg. His research interests
include altruism and helping behavior,
fairness and responsibility in close rela-
tionships, and cooperation and solidari-
tY.
Both addresses will be followed by
panel discussions led by the speakers.
Panelists will include Professor Asher
Milbauer, Florida International
University; Dr. Felix Rogers, president,
Cranbrook Peace Foundation; Professor
Marc W Kruman, Wayne State
University; Professor Anne Rothe,
WSU; Professor Donald Haase, WSU;

University.
A session devoted to altruism within
the framework of religion will feature
Father John West, ecumenical officer,
Archdiocese of Detroit; the Rev. Richard
Singleton, executive director,
Metropolitan Christian Council
Windsor-Detroit; and Rabbi Dannel
Schwartz, Temple Shir Shalom, who will
give presentations. The rapporteur will
be Professor Melvin Small, distinguished
professor of history, WSU, and member
of the HMC's academic advisory com-
mittee.
