so many positive ideals, We have also
become the representatives of sexual
depravity and immorality for the
world. And I fear that if we don't try
to stem the tide, God will begin to
withdraw, and remove some of the
Divine protection that American soci-
ety has until now enjoyed.
I cherish the freedoms America
grants each of us as individuals, and I
advocate curtailing those freedoms —
even slightly — with the greatest of
trepidation. But as a society we must
uphold the eternal ethical truths that
God lays down for us. So I'm voting
for Proposal 2.
Oh, one more thing: If you agree
with my first three underlying
assumptions (as so many non-
Orthodox Jews do), but your rabbi
advocates gay marriage, you can do
one of two things: You can either
adjust your outlook about God and
the Torah. Or, you can find a new
rabbi. ❑

Jews and, additionally, a sense of
painful alienation from our own
religious institutions...
Therefore be it resolved that we,
The Rabbinical Assembly, while
affirming our tradition's prescrip-
tion for heterosexuality,
• Support full civil equality for
gays and lesbians in our national
life, and
• Deplore the violence against
gays and lesbians in our society, and
• Reiterate that, as are all Jews,
gay men and lesbians are welcome
as members in our congregations,
and
• Call upon our synagogues and
the arms of our movement to
increase our awareness, understand-
ing and concern for our fellow Jews
who are gay and lesbian.
To be clear, the Constitution was
written to protect the rights of all
citizens, not to negate them for any
specific group. Furthermore, the
Constitution is not the place to dic-
tate a change in morality every time
a politician or small, but vocal
group has an idea about what the
morality should be.
Let us join in the legacy of Rabbi
Heschel, joining hands at the polls
and praying with our feet so that
discrimination, bigotry and intoler-
ance have no place in our midst,
not in our state and certainly not in
our Constitution.
