The Immigrant
Based on the true story of Haskell
Harelik, this musical tells the story of a
young Russian Jew who enters America
in 1909 through Galveston, Texas, and
struggles to assimilate into the rural
community. Harelik, who peddles a
pushcart with bananas and other wares,
has his life changed when he asks a
small-town banker and his Southern
Baptist wife for a drink of water from
their well. The banker winds up giving
Harelik a loan, and his pushcart business
evolves into a big department store.
