Professors Ciechanover and Hershko of the Technion's Rappaport
Faculty of Medicine, along with their partner Dr. Irwin Rose of U. C. —
Irvine, won the Nobel for their discovery of the ubiquitin-mediated protein
degradation. Their discovery has important implications for fighting diseases
such as cancer and cystic fibrosis. In fact, Velcade, a cancer drug, was
approved for use in the U.S. last year, based upon the ubiquitin discoveries.
