In Chemis -_ry Professors Ciechanover and Hershko of the Technion's Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, along with their partner Dr. Irwin Rose of U. C. — Irvine, won the Nobel for their discovery of the ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation. Their discovery has important implications for fighting diseases such as cancer and cystic fibrosis. In fact, Velcade, a cancer drug, was approved for use in the U.S. last year, based upon the ubiquitin discoveries.
