Hannah Murano Architecture is quite
evident in the culmination of Seldom
Blues' concept and general layout.
Innovative use of translucent and
transparent materials seems to project the
play of light, color and view to every area
of the restaurant.
Seldom Blues seats about 300 ... 250
in the restaurant and 50 in a private
room glassed in against the backdrop of
the Detroit River and its
scenic views.
It is open Monday-Friday, lunch and
dinner, 11-11; Saturday, 3-1; Sunday, 5
p.m.-11 p.m., that includes a Sunday
Brunch, 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
Monday through Saturday evenings
feature blues and jazz combos except
Wednesday, when Johnny Trudell's big
18-piece band takes the stage ... Seldom
Blues partner, musician Alexander
Zonjic, is a regular performer ... and if
another partner, Robert Porcher, was as
musically talented as he is playing for the
Detroit Lions, he'd be up there too.
You might say that the hip atmosphere
of the beautiful Seldom Blues with its
large picture windows and crowded
excitement is like a very personal pent-
house party ... within a highly sophisti-
cated, dynamic ambience where you are
invited by its owners to "play here."
As an opening door to a hopeful new
Detroit, one couldn't ask for much more
than a place like Seldom Blues.
SITE OF THE COMING Yossi's
Israeli Cuisine opening in September by
Israeli restaurateur Yossi Benjamin, will
be at a different location ... It will remain
in Robin's Nest on Orchard Lake Road,
north of 14 Mile, in West Bloomfield
but take over the locale of Cedars Cafe,
on the northeast side of Mike Robin's
shopping plaza.
THE POPULAR Billy Rose group
will be at Mario's on Second for listening
and dancing ... Friday and Saturday
evenings, Sept. 3 and 4.
ANSWER DEPT. ... Word has it that
the former Gajyoen Japanese restaurant
in West Bloomfield may be opened again
... It is a beautiful place with a lot of
hand carving by the previous owner ...
Hard to believe but November will be a
year since Blue Nile Ethiopian restaurant
moved from Trapper's Alley in Detroit to
Nine Mile in Ferndale.
CULINARY CAPSULE ... Until
being changed in 1980, its name since
the 1950s was Harbor Bar ... a small
neighborhood tavern with one room that
had a pool table and seated about 35
people ... Drinks, burgers, chicken and
chips was the daily fare.
When it became Harbor Steak House,
items were added to conform more to its
new name ... Prime rib, steaks, crab legs,
whitefish, salmon, frog legs, etc. ...
Youngsters also have their own dishes to
order, and around 12 homemade soups
are rotated daily.
Located on Orchard Lake Road,
between Commerce Road and Cass Lake
Road in Keego Harbor, Harbor Steak
House is a casual restaurant with a look
of cozy warmth.
Seating is for about 125 plus 30 more
in a bar-lounge area and 15 stools at the
bar ... A lower level seats another 75,
where its all-you-can-eat fish fry on
Fridays is held.
MAIL DEPT ... From Hilda August
... "In reading your coltunn, I thought
you would appreciate this bit of )lour
yesteryears. In 1947, Milton and I built a
log cabin on Pontiac Lake for summers
only. Our son Barry has it now and is
doing many renovations.
'NXThile picking up old floors, the
workers removed linoleum and found
layers of newspapers. His 16-year-old
daughter, Jessica, insisted on keeping her
found 'antiques' and showed me a copy
of the Detroit Jewish News of April 1947
that had been discovered and there you
were. I never knew we had a Jewish News
back then.
REUNION DEPT. ... 60th Reunion
by Detroit Central High grads of 1944 is
a Sunday luncheon, Sept. 12, at Fox and
Hounds, Bloomfield Hills ... Call
Connie Levine Adler, (248) 737-2559;
Lorraine Zussman Schubiner, (248) 788-
9777; or Phyllis Fine Tyner, (248) 354-
6018.
CONGRATS ... to Bernie and Roz
Tucker on their 55th anniversary.
BUMPING INTO Sammy Pearlman
at Angelo's Bistro in West Bloomfield
brought back memories ... We both
delivered papers from the same corner
on 12th Street in our youth, and the
guys probably called him "Sammy the
Hustler" because he always seemed to sell
more papers than anyone.
Our corner boss was Abe Terman, who
almost always let me carry my papers in
a red wagon with the handle that folded
completely down ... I later wrote about
that little red wagon that Abe said he
would someday give me ... and of the
package that came from Florida with a
little red wagon it in ... it stood majesti-
cally on my desk until the Jewish News
fire of 2002 ... Even that little red metal
wagon couldn't beat the heat and per-
ished along with other memorabilia.
I forgot to ask Sammy, who now lives
in Delray Beach, Fla., if he ever ran into
Abe Terman ... I never did get to thank
him.
