Koufax Vs.
Detroiter

Historian Jim Grey of the Jewish
Genealogical and Jewish Historical soci-
eties and Irwin Cohen, author of Echoes
of Detroit's Jewish Communities, recently
took in a Tigers game with Marvin
Berman, the Jewish Educational Loan
Service coordinator at JVS.
At the game, Berman recalled the
date marked the 50th anniversary of his
at-bats against Hall of Fame Dodger
pitcher Sandy Koufax.
"I was a catcher on the Wayne State
University baseball team and we went to
Cincinnati for a playoff game against
the University of Cincinnati, where
Koufax was a student and star pitcher,"
Berman said.
"We had heard a lot about Koufax,"
Berman continued, "and he was every-
thing we heard about and more. Koufax
struck me out and the only time I hit
the ball fairly, I popped out."
A year later, Koufax signed with the
then-Brooklyn Dodgers and began his
Hall of Fame career.
