not religious Jew." First foray back
to Jewish roots after college was
with the Federation — programs
like the Jewish Entrepreneur
Network and the Jewish
Community Council's New Leaders'
Project. He spends time at Temple
Shir Shalom and likes rabbis who
are more his age, like Rabbi Michael
Moskowitz.
Victor: "Judaism is central to who I
am, but I haven't yet found the
Jewish community that's right for
my family." [Victor studied with
Shaarey Zedek Rabbi Joseph Krakoff
for a year while saying Kaddish daily
for her mother. Married by a rabbi
and a Buddhist priest, she and Ann
made a commitment to raise their
family in a Jewish household.]
Rosenthal: "I studied with Partners
in Torah [a Southfield-based pro-
gram at Yeshiva Beth Yehudah] for a
year, and learned philosophical and
Jewish law. My rabbi might see a
Jewish part (to renovating and

building in deteriorated areas), but I
don't necessarily see it... I want to
raise my children as a practicing Jew
— especially for my grandmother
Dorothy who is 101!"
Gary Torgow of Oak Park: (His
Detroit company, the Sterling
Group, works with Rosenthal's.
Torgow, president of Yeshiva Beth
Yehudah, introduced Rosenthal to
Partners in Torah and invites him to
spend the Jewish holidays with his
family.) "Folks like Jon who choose
to live in Detroit must keep a strong
and focused eye on their responsibil-
ities as Jews and as participants in
the Jewish community."
Gad-Harf: "The Jewish young
adults in Detroit should establish
grassroots fellowship groups,
chavurot, and eventually the Jewish
community will embrace them. The
most important thing isn't tradition-
al religious practices but fellowship
with fellow Jews who share ideas,
holidays and lifecycle events." P1
