Life
The real truth about livin' in the D.
Location, Location, Location
What do you like about
living in Detroit?
Rosenthal: "I can walk out my door
and go to a Tigers' game, great
restaurants, the theater, and I can
see another country (Canada) from
my window."
All of them: Diversity. The people.
Most of them: The opportunities,
great restaurants, ethnic neighbor-
hood restaurants and markets, the
architecture and Belle Isle.
Southwest Detroiters: The "neigh-
borhoody" feel.
Victor: Acceptance of our same-sex
family.
with the same issues, and just come
out on different sides of the same
point."
No one mentioned crime. "Don't
park your car on the street," was the
only reply.
To Be Or Not To Be
Would you raise a family
in Detroit?
Fogelman: "I won't stay here forever
if I have a family. But I don't know
where I'd live."
Victor: "Rafi (age 3, daughter) goes
to school at Temple Emanu-El.
She'll probably go to Detroit's
Waldorf School, but we're also con-
sidering Hillel [Day School in
Farmington Hills]."
What does Detroit need
to change?
Israel, Tobocman, Victor: High
pollution, thanks to highways
and incinerators, leads to high
rate of asthma for children in
the city.
Victor: Seeing so much suffering
and poverty. Not having access
to nature and shopping. "I have
to group shopping needs and
plan weekly ventures to the sub-
urbs. On the other hand, it's sad
to see such disparity between the
suburbs and the city."
Levy: "I don't like strip malls
and rarely shop in the suburbs
(he lives in a carriage house near
Harbortown market on East
Jefferson). I don't like the many
vacant lots."
Fogelman: Shopping is getting
better downtown, with a 24-
hour pharmacy, a great little campus
grocery store and a Blockbuster
Video. But, he says, it's challenging
working with the city's bureaucracy
and he wants more urban profes-
sionals around after work and on
weekends.
Tobocman: "The high tax rate, our
insurance is redlined (bumped up if
you live in the city). It's dishearten-
ing to hear people who feel it's
unsafe to travel here or who have a
lot of anger because of the treasure
the city once was. We all struggle

Tobocman: "I think we'd raise a
family in Detroit. The benefits:
exposing kids to other cultures and
ways of living. Two major concerns
are the elementary schools (there are
excellent magnate high schools) and
the air quality."
The Jewish Connection
Do you feel out of the loop?
Fogelman: "Bar mitzvahed and con-
firmed, I consider myself a cultural,
