Food Benefits Families

Thanks to Joel Jacob, president of the
Bottle Crew, the Wal-Mart
Supercenter in Howell initiated a pro-
gram to benefit food banks, pantries
and soup kitchens.
Last year, Jacob approached Wal-
Mart's leadership to discuss coordinat-
ing an effort to benefit needy families
in the Detroit area. Under Howell
Store Director Patrick Shanks and his
store associates, Wal-Mart has begun
donating large quantities of food and
other products to the Detroit-based
Gleaners Community FoodBank.

Beth El Honors Cohen

Temple Beth El bestowed Miriam
Cohen with the President's Cup for her
dedicated and committed service to the
congregation.
She chairs the music committee and
annual senior concert, and is a past sis-
terhood president and a current mem-
ber of the board of trustees. She previ-
ously chaired sisterhood's 100th
anniversary celebration and the Glazer
Institute and co-chaired the Torah writ-
ing project.

Once a month, Gleaners arranges
for pick up of the goods from Wal-
Mart's Reclamation Center in Indiana.
The items are brought to the Gleaners
warehouse, where volunteers package
the food into family packs for local
soup kitchens and pantries.
Since Yad Ezra follows specific
dietary restrictions, the Berkley-based
kosher food pantry receives full pallets
of food from Gleaners. The food is
sorted by volunteers and distributed to
Yad Ezra's 1,100 client family roster.
