Food Benefits Families Thanks to Joel Jacob, president of the Bottle Crew, the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Howell initiated a pro- gram to benefit food banks, pantries and soup kitchens. Last year, Jacob approached Wal- Mart's leadership to discuss coordinat- ing an effort to benefit needy families in the Detroit area. Under Howell Store Director Patrick Shanks and his store associates, Wal-Mart has begun donating large quantities of food and other products to the Detroit-based Gleaners Community FoodBank. Beth El Honors Cohen Temple Beth El bestowed Miriam Cohen with the President's Cup for her dedicated and committed service to the congregation. She chairs the music committee and annual senior concert, and is a past sis- terhood president and a current mem- ber of the board of trustees. She previ- ously chaired sisterhood's 100th anniversary celebration and the Glazer Institute and co-chaired the Torah writ- ing project. Once a month, Gleaners arranges for pick up of the goods from Wal- Mart's Reclamation Center in Indiana. The items are brought to the Gleaners warehouse, where volunteers package the food into family packs for local soup kitchens and pantries. Since Yad Ezra follows specific dietary restrictions, the Berkley-based kosher food pantry receives full pallets of food from Gleaners. Families Gather A summer gathering for area Indian Americans and Jews and their families will be held 6-9 p.m. Thursday, July 29, at Heritage Park (North Shelter), Farmington Hills, on Farmington Road between 10 and 11 Mile roads. There is no charge, but guests are asked to bring vegetarian appetizers, sal- ads or desserts to share. The American Jewish Committee Metropolitan Detroit Chapter administers this pro- grarn.The park's North Shelter is near a playground and has tables. Guests are encouraged to bring sports equipment. In case of rain, the groups will meet at a home in West Bloomfield. For Cuba Mission Set B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Region, through its Center for Public Policy, is planning a second humanitarian and cultural mission to Cuba, Nov. 11-19.
