Mark Berkowitz, 15, of Walled Lake, a stu-
dent at Walled Lake Western High School, has
been selected to participate in the National
Young Leaders Conference in Washington,
D.C. It is a program for high school students
who have demonstrated leadership potential
and scholastic merit.
Marji Silk of Oak Park had a photograph of a
hot air balloon awarded the International
Gold Medal in the Detroit International Color
Photography Competition sponsored by the
Photographic Society of America. Her pictures
of hot air balloon events will be on display at
Borders Books in Dearborn through October.
Nancy Pearl, former Detroiter of Seattle,
Wash., retired as executive director of the
Seattle Public Library's Washington Center for
the Book. She is writing a second book on
favorite books and continues with a public
radio show as well as hosting a TV author-
interview show and volunteering for the
library's literacy program.
David Steibel, a student from Bloomfield
Hills, has been selected to participate in the
Research Science Institute Summer Internship
Program for academically talented high school
students in science and technology. He will
attend the program at Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, where he will conduct research
in linear programming and cryptography.
