Kosher Cure

Runny-nosed, kosher-observant children
now have a new way to feel better, with
the kosher certification of Triaminic
pediatric cold-cough-allergy liquid med-
ications.
"l'he New York-based Orthodox
Union along with Novartis Consumer
Health, Inc., New Jersey; announced
that the eight varieties of the medication
will soon be certified as kosher.
Novartis Consumer Health is the first
major over-the-counter company to
attain the OU certification for this type
of medication.
The products \\rill be available with
the OU kosher symbol this summer,
and have been certified as OU parve,
having neither meat nor dairy ingredi-
ents.
"This is a very significant develop-
ment for the kosher world," declared
Rabbi Menachem Genack, rabbinic
administrator of the OU kosher divi-
sion. "In addition to the enormous
growth of food products being certified
as OU kosher, now a major line of over-
the-counter pharmaceuticals is also being
made available to the kosher consumer.
"Triaminic is respected as an effective
cold-cough-allergy medication for chil-
dren, but because of the presence of pos-
sibly non-kosher glycerin or other prod-
ucts, kosher observant parents could not
give Triaminic to their children. Now,
thanks to the Novartis Consumer
Health, Inc.-OU collaboration, they
can.

The National Cancer Institute of the
National Institutes of Health is seeking
Ashkenazi Jewish families to participate
in a study of kidney cancer.
Ashkenazic Jews trace their ancestors
to Central and Eastern Europe.
Participants will be asked to fill out a
medical and genealogy survey and to
donate a small blood sample.
The National Cancer Institute said,
"One method used to identify genes
associated with kidney cancer is to study
the disease in a group of people who are
genetically similar."
Ashkenazic Jews who have two or
more family members who have or had
kidney cancer can volunteer by contact-
ing Shyla Hale, (800) 949-6704 or
