Q : I was on the Miracle Mission 4 Trip and

noticed there were no funeral homes in Israel.
I was surprised when our guide told us funerals
there were free. How is that possible?

A: In Israel, funeral's are handled by municipal

Chevra Kadishas, which are contracted by the
government. When you live in Israel, you are
taxed on your income and the funds are placed in
the treasury. At the time of death, burial expenses
are taken care of If you consider the average life
span of Israelis and the amount of taxes they
have paid, the burial is anything but free!

mer Detroiter of Kingston, Pa., died
June 17, 2004. She attended the
University of Michigan and lived in
Detroit for 40 years; her husband
was an internist in private practice.
After his death in 1977, she returned
to Kingston.
In the Wyoming Valley, Mrs.
Teitelbaum served on the boards of
Family Service of Wyoming Valley,
the Jewish Family Service and B'nai
B'rith Apartments. She was a life
member of the Council of Jewish
Women a member of Temple Israel
and its sisterhood and of the Jewish
Home of Northeast Pa. She was also
a volunteer teacher of English for
the foreign born and part of the vol-
unteer literacy program at the Hoyt
Library in Kingston.
During the time she was in
Detroit, Mrs. Teitelbaum was a read-
ing specialist in the Detroit public
schools and a certified Braille
instructor, specializing in children's
books. She was a Girl Scout leader
for 12 years, a PTA member, a mem-
ber of the International Institute of
Detroit, where she taught English to
the foreign born. A life member of
Hadassah, she also served on the
Detroit board, was the president of
her Hadassah chapter and was also a

Sharon Teitelbaum and Jonathan
Bockian of Watertown, Mass.; son,
Dale Teitelbaum of Pitts, Pa.; grand-
children, Rabbi Jennie and Rabbi
David Rosenn, Tony Castleman and
Rajni Joshi, Seth Castleman, Emily
Bockian and Michael Landsburg,
Sarah Bocian, Marc Teitelbaum;
great-grandchildren, Ben Rosenn,
Sagar Castleman; brothers and sister-
in-law, Judge Max Rosenn, Harold
and Sallyanne Rosenn. She was the
beloved wife of the late Dr. Myer
Teitelbaum; dear sister of the late
Florence Weinberg; devoted sister-
in-law of the late Tillie Rosenn, the
late Zelda Butman and the late Sam
Butman.

JACKIE "JACK" VERDI, 64, of

Birmingham, died June 16, 2004.
He was a partner at Micco
Construction.
Mr. Verdi is survived by his wife,
Pam Verdi; daughters, Jamie Verdi

Verdi of Boston; sons and daughters-
in-law, Dr. Jim and Dr. Juliana
Verdi, Michael Verdi; sister and
brother-in-law, Lori and Dick
Kabot; mother-in-law, Pauline
Anderson. He was the beloved son
of the late Vincent James and the
late Minnie Verdi; dear son-in-law of
the late Roger Anderson.
