`A Great Role Model'
LEONARD POGER

At Congregation Shaarey Zedek,
where the Sobermans were members,
his father "was a jack all trades in reli-
gious matters," said Charles. The
Soberman children were made "very
aware of his community involvement"
and they followed their father's tradi-
tions.
Recalling his father's Jewish back-
ground, Charles said his father was
raised in an Orthodox environment.
Mr. Soberman was always interested in
cantorial music, having sung in the
choir of his father's congregation.
Mr. Soberman was connected to
numerous Jewish organizations, such as
the Jewish War Veterans (he was in an
administrative post in the Army Air
Corps during World War II) as well as
Shaarey Zedek, Yad Ezra, Hillel Day
School of Metropolitan Detroit (where
he had been a former board member)
and Israel Bonds. In past years, he had -
been honored by Yeshiva Beth Yehudah
and Israel Bonds.
He was also a member of Shaarey

athan D. Soberman was
known to many as an "easy
touch" because of his dona-
tions to hundreds of groups, said son
Charles.
"With some regularity, Lubavitcher
rabbis would come into his office [for
donations]," Charles recalled. "He was
always there for them."
But he never sought the spotlight,
asking many times not to be identified
as a donor, his son added.
Mr. Soberman was a co-owner of
Mercury Paint in Detroit, formed in
1919 by his father, Jacob. The firm was
sold to Sherwin Williams in 1996.
Charles continued in the family busi-
ness until its sale.
Mr. Soberman, 82, died at his West
Bloomfield home June 15, 2004, of
complications from heart disease, with
Sally, his wife of 60 years, at his side.
Known to his friends as "Nate" or
"Natie," Mr. Soberman was also

model as a husband and father," being
