Children Explore Roots
Starting Sunday, July 4, children ages
5 to 12 and their families are welcome
to dig, sift and explore Israel in an
archeological playground created
exclusively for Shalom Street, the
museum of Jewish life and culture
located at the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield.
The special exhibit, "Diggin' Israel,"
features a family-friendly replica of an
excavation site of a home during the
Second Temple period and represents
LOREDO'S
ATHLETIC CLUB
the museum's most ambitious pro-
gramming since opening its doors in
December of 2003.
Designed for group participation,
the program offers a show-and-tell of
Israel's basic archaeological facts and
findings. Sessions take approximately
an hour and a half and begin inside
Shalom Street with the guidance of its
resident acting troupe as well as other
audio and visual media.
Moving outdoors to the "big top"
on the grounds of the Eugene and
Marcia Applebaum Jewish
Community Campus, participants
rotate through various activities, exca-
vating, identifying and examining
their finds, and then creating their
own take-home project.
Penny Blumenstein is museum
chair. Working in close partnership
with Melitz, a non-profit educational
agency in Jerusalem, the goal was to
provide children a connection with
Israel through archaeology.
With the support of the Charles H.
Gershenson Trust Museum Fund,
"Diggin' Israel" will run from July 4
